As it was World Book Day, on the 3rd of March, my school allowed the Year 7's and 8's to dress up as their favourite book character for the day. There were many interesting characters appearing in the corridors but, I couldn't help noticing a lot of Queen of Hearts, Mad Hatters and rabbits in waist coats popping up around the school. Thinking back I remembered how Alice in Wonderland characters were a favourite among children, not just in my school but mothers on Facebook taking pictures of their own Mad Hatters and rabbits. Furthermore, I wondered what makes this classic fantasy so appealing to children.
We all know the story of the young girl, who falls down a rabbit hole, into Wonderland and lands into a world full of potions, weird people and talking animals. Who wouldn't love to have this dream like Alice does. This dreams magic mesmerizes children, and it makes them laugh. Most adults do not like to break the law of logic, yet kids love the wildly improbable. This book is perfect for kids who are going through the horrors of growing up, like Alice, yet are still struggling with leaving their childish ways. Hence the love of characters such as the Mad Hatter who has tea parties and never takes anything seriously.
Overall, books like Alice and Wonderland are wonderful because they allow children to escape from what they may see as a world filled with boring logic and none of the wonders of childhood left in it once you reach places like high school. What's wrong with reading about a little magic with disappearing cats and a Queen who chops her subjects heads off?
